电影背景：《巴霍巴利王》的电影情节有着耆那教的圣人Bahubali俗世经历的影子。Bahubali曾是南印一个王国（如今的卡纳塔克邦）的二王子，曾因王位与长兄兵戎相见并取得了胜利。然而成为了国王的Bahubali却厌倦了尘世，抛却王位出家为耆那教僧侣，最终涅槃，被后世的耆那教徒尊为圣人。电影里将王位之争作为主线，略去了bahubali出家的经历。把真实的历史改编为架空的故事。此外导演还称受到了印度史诗《摩诃婆罗多》的启发。巴霍巴利雕像遍布印度，为耆那教徒所祭拜，其中最大的要数位于卡纳塔克邦的巴霍巴利雕像，高达17.4米，建于公元983年（尤如月非介绍）。 

此片观赏研究俱佳，实乃上乘之作。其画景波澜壮阔、气势恢弘，如史诗，悠然而来，如战鼓，荡气回肠；如名典，回味无穷。取之史事，然亦仿之史诗，巨资簇成，前无古人。不才诚以古文述之，增古风韵味，助益欣赏之氛围。

一、开端

如是我闻，古印度摩喜施末底王国，贵夫人携襁褓之婴亡出，背中箭锉，蹒跚难行，涉水险而命将终，向那神祇欲以己命换子存，话毕而逝。雾蔼渐散，而以指向三千高山之巅。黎明之时，有善女子桑伽遇之，不明其身与来处，又膝下无子，遂纳之，得名希瓦。此儿体健，自此眷恋山水流瀑，腾越其间。廿十数载，便成勇士之希瓦（帕拉巴斯饰），奔跃如飞，身轻如燕，力撼山野。虔诚湿婆神，意息灵通。又念其母怜护，以千斤力拔尊神于流瀑，神喜布应，引之面具，导之翻越，终得颠峰。见此佳人，眉如翠羽，肌如白雪；腰如束素，齿如含贝；英姿逼人，乃面具之主也。是名阿凡缇卡（特曼娜·芭蒂亚饰）。希瓦为之倾倒，有此碧玉，合此良辰，情动而心生爱意。良宵一过，复订终身，阿凡缇卡诉其意愿，实乃王国叛人，拟救囚禁二十五年之提婆犀那王后（安努舒卡·谢蒂饰）。兵险围剿，事急，希瓦杀之，以雪崩护阿凡缇卡，出，代其行。  

入城，灭众士卒，与提婆犀那王后出，王之军亦逐之。其将卡塔帕（萨蒂亚拉吉饰）率军阻击，落入其彀。二人各司其主，并剑而战。希瓦受袭，其身不支，奋力灭其贼头，又有叛军及母家人至。卡塔帕于其力竭时出，忽有闪电雷震，四下通亮，得见希瓦，卡塔帕惊诧失声，热泪盈眶，拜伏于地，大呼“巴霍巴利”。众人惊异处，王后心蔚然，希瓦身世终得昭明，尘封往事，徐徐得展。 

二、前史

希瓦即为巴霍巴利王子也。初，巴霍巴利王先父马哈拉甲.维卡拉玛德瓦以大智勇，立摩喜施末底王国。长为比加拉德瓦，生子巴拉拉德夫德斯，纵于酒色，失位禅让于舍弟。然天命不可测，皇弟病殁，王后难产，巴霍巴利出而其母逝。长复不满溢于表，豺狼猥亵之徒，以为有隙，欺凌无主之难。比加拉德瓦妻希瓦伽米有大德行，贤睿雅量，智出众人，以卡塔帕力及谋略，削平叛贼，并俯身于民之福祉，以此承继大统，君临天下。女王以二子择其智者为上，是以暂摄，诸子长成，必复禅之。

巴霍巴利慈悲灵圣，遇其母王祭神，有毒蝎钳身而不觉，以大勇控之于掌中，忍那伤痛，终不以知。又，卡塔帕乃国中栋梁，死士也，巴霍巴利王子察见饮食，糠糟而已，于心不忍，共享其食，众遂服其德。与堂兄巴拉拉德夫德斯王子试艺，堂兄以蛮力碎石，惊天动地，震摄众心，皆飒然惊惧，杀伐气重。然王子以箭中的，悠然而视，忽如电闪，射红果一串，跌落女仆怀中，众之心欢喜，视王子欢喜意生，皆服其德行。是以，女王欢喜，心属之也。

巴拉拉德夫德斯力抗千钧，杀伐于形色，所过处，草木皆惊，鸟虫尽散，易生众怨也。其德薄，而其心纵于权柄之间，其力霸于朝野之中。是以女王不喜。

或言：上何以定二子之统？女王回之：神恩以赐，维命维情，我亦懵懂，假以时日，以为试。

时国士萨克塔为利所趋，窃盗国玺之秘，拱手于敌手。女王勃然诏下，以二子捕之。二王子显身手，终得叛逆，然其逆以死葬崖，巴霍巴利援绳巴拉拉德夫德斯，纵身高崖，捕得贼身。巴拉拉德夫德斯忽生邪行，欲以弃索毙其命。诚以神恩，卡塔帕至，奸行方止。 

归，报称妖孽之地卡拉克亚领兵十万，突袭而来。时女王与众将会商，或言妖军无忌，婴孩尽戮，妇女皆劫，所过之处，三年饥荒，乃人神共厌之徒也。王问对策，众将以计，终不肯。巴霍巴利以三叉戟计，众将惊，惟王以听。备壕沟，发精兵，巴拉拉德夫德斯父以邪行扣其器械，巴霍巴利亦不怨。待战，其父声称若得敌首，应继大统。王无应。其父怏怏而退。战，阵祭战神，敌以为之妖行。巴霍巴利以智力行，破敌无数。然巴拉拉德夫德斯以器械胜，杀伐果敢。二王子高低不分，各有功绩。忽敌首辱其母王，巴霍巴利入敌阵，力取其首以祭阵前。巴拉拉德夫德斯随之行，以转刀车助。

是时，敌破一阵，忽汹涌而入。王兵大乱，退如潮水，军心溃散。巴霍巴利忽立其中，以大威力行，声色俱定，破空而行，称生死之关，岂可退而没之？辱我母亲，必夺其首，呈于母前，方可称死！众大醒，无惧，大勇。时箭伤于身，亦不理，拔而行，势如破竹，无人可挡，众将士随之。巴霍巴利得取敌酋，拖行以还。唯巴拉拉德夫德斯夺功，以兵器锄杀。果大胜。然，巴拉拉德夫德斯不以功浅，以其父威逼帝统，王益不喜。王称：其功德有，然刻圣坛，寺庙立颂，不得有统言之。众咸服。唯此积怨于二贼心也。

卡塔帕言毕，希瓦复问勇士卡塔帕：我父大勇力，何以近身？我父上等智，何以没身？卡塔帕呈悲苦云：为我所杀，我之罪过，胜过恒河沙数，实难斗量，我亦悲之，血啼在心！

In the ancient Kingdomof Mahishmati in India,Sivagami, the queen mother (Ramya Krishnan), carrying a baby in her arms,emerges from a cave directly next to a very big high waterfall. After killingoff soldiers pursuing her, Sivagami decides to save the baby by letting herselfdrown in the river, while keeping the baby held atop her hand. Local villagersspot the stranded child and save the infant. Sanga (Rohini) and her husbandname the infant Shivudu (Shivu in Tamil) and raise him as their own son. To preventanyone from coming for the baby, they seal the cave with a large rock. 

Shivudu (Prabhas) grows up aspiring to climb the waterfall whichirks his mother as she does not want to lose her son. He attempts again andagain to climb the massive waterfall but fails. Sanga asks Swamiji (TanikellaBharani) for a solution who tells her that she has to pour water on Shivling116 times for her prayers. When Shivudu finds out about it, he picks Shivlingon his shoulders and puts it below the waterfall. From the top of the falls, amask falls in to the lap of Shivudu. He creates an imprint of the person whomthe mask belongs to, a beautiful girl. He tries again to climb the waterfalland seeing visions of the girl whom the mask belongs to, succeeds. 

On top of the waterfall, Shivudu, now called Shiva, discovers thatthe mask belongs to Avanthika (Tamannaah), a rebellious warrior whose group hasindulged in a guerrilla warfare against king Bhallala Deva (Rana Daggubati) of Mahishmati Kingdom. The group intends to rescueformer queen Devasena (Anushka Shetty) who is the real mother of Shiva and shehas been chained in the palace center dais by the king for the past 25 years.Avanthika is given the next opportunity to attempt a rescue mission for thequeen. 

Avanthika initially doubts Shiva's intentions, but later falls inlove with him after she finds out that he has climbed the waterfall for her.Shiva pledges to help her in her mission and sneaks into Mahishmati torescue Devasena. There, the king's Royal Guard Kattappa (Sathyaraj), known forhis great warrior abilities, attack Shiva with his group upon the order of theKing. After Shiva beheads Bhadra (Bhallala Deva's son), Kattappa drops hisweapons on realizing that Shiva is Mahendra Baahubali, the son of late kingAmarendra Baahubali. Shiva's adoptive family travel through the cave to jointhe others and witness the events. 

A flashback reveals the animosity between cousins AmarendraBaahubali and Bhallala Deva, whose father is Bijjala Deva (Nassar). Bijjala wasdenied the throne due to his bad habits but he feels that this was done as hehad a disfigured hand from birth, and his brother Vijayendra became the newking. This creates a hidden enmity in Bijjala Deva's mind. Vijayendra died at ayoung age and Amarendra Baahubali is born within the next few months, thoughhis mother dies at childbirth. Sivagami, with the help of Kattappa kills therebelling ministers of the kingdom and becomes steward till a new king iscrowned. Amarendra Baahubali and Bhallala Deva are brought up together, butBijjala Deva poisons Bhallala's mind to get the throne. The brothers are bothtrained in all areas including arts, science, disguise, politics and warfare,but both of them have different approaches towards kingship. AmarendraBaahubali is liberal to everyone but Bhallala Deva is violent and achieves hisgoals with any means possible. 

When a war is waged by another kingdom, they both are guided bySivagami that whoever brings the head of the enemy Ruler will be rewarded asthe New King. While Amarendra Baahubali uses his skill, cunning and ability tocrush the enemy, Bhallala Deva uses all the resources of the army, killinginnocent people as well as the enemy, to win the war. The wise Sivagamiannounces Amarendra Baahubali as the new emperor because of his nobility andleadership in the war. Bhallala Deva is appointed as the general of the army.Kattappa and the others worship him as the king.After the flashback,Sanga wishes to see Amarendra Baahubali but Kattapa tells everyone that theking is dead and tearfully reveals himself as the killer.
